Our Sizing
Before diving into your next magical sewing project, it’s important to start with the most vital step of all: measuring yourself.
Unlike the sizing you see on store-bought clothing, sewing pattern sizes follow a different system—often based on real body measurements rather than vanity sizing or brand-specific fit models. This means your “usual” size off the rack might not match your sewing pattern size at all—and that’s completely normal!
Skipping this step can lead to a disappointing fit, and we want your Belladonna creation to feel just right—like it was made for you (because it was!). Each Belladonna Pattern includes its own custom size chart for that pattern. So before purchasing, make sure to cross reference the size chart provided on the pattern product page 💕
✨ Why Pattern Sizing is Different
Store-bought clothes are designed to fit a general idea of body shapes and sizes—and these vary wildly between brands. What’s labeled a “Size 10” in one shop might be closer to a “Size 6” or a “Size 14” in another. Sewing patterns, on the other hand, rely on actual body measurements—no guessing, no vanity sizing.
That’s why it’s crucial to take your measurements and compare them to our Belladonna Patterns size chart before printing your pattern or cutting into your beautiful fabric. It helps ensure the best fit and the most flattering silhouette, every time.
🧵 How to Take Your Measurements
You’ll only need a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and ideally a friend to help (but you can absolutely do it solo!).
1. Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, making sure it goes around your back and across your nipples in a straight, level line. Don’t pull too tight—you want it snug but not squishing. Keep your arms relaxed by your sides.
2. Waist
Find your natural waist—this is usually the narrowest part of your torso, right above your belly button and below your ribcage. Bend side to side if you're not sure—where you crease is your natural waistline. Wrap the tape around, again keeping it level and snug.
3. Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and bum. This spot is usually about 7–9 inches (18–23 cm) below your waist, but may vary depending on your height.
🌿 A Few Tips for Accurate Measuring:
-
Wear lightweight clothing or measure over well-fitted undergarments.
-
Keep the tape parallel to the floor all the way around.
-
Don’t suck in or stand rigid—you want your measurements to reflect how you naturally are, so your finished garment feels comfortable and fits well.
💫 Ready to Match Your Measurements?
Once you have your bust, waist, and hip measurements, head to the pattern size chart and find the closest match. If you’re between sizes, choose the size based on the garment's intended fit (we’ll often include ease info in the pattern instructions) or consider blending between sizes for a custom fit.
Remember—your size is just a number, and the real magic is in making clothes that fit you, not the other way around.
